Top of the Pops New Year Special (BBC One, 5.10pm)
Fearne Cotton and Clara Amfo present a compilation of the biggest hits of the past 12 months, with tracks by some of the year’s most popular and best-selling artists. The show will feature a live performance by Christine & The Queens, George Ezra and Anne-Marie. There’ll also be appearances from Mabel, Tom Grennan, Years & Years, Tom Odell, Clean Bandit and B Young. On top of all that, the very last number one song of 2018 will be performed.
Graham Norton’s Big Red Chair (Virgin Media One, 11.15pm)
A behind-the-scenes look at TV’s most famous chair, which meets some of the people who have entertained Graham’s viewers with their amusing (or not so amusing) anecdotes. Over the course of his career, Graham has judged more than 500 red chair stories. In this special, he looks at how the red chair experience has impacted and changed the lives of some of the show’s storytellers.
Philomena (BBC Two, 9pm)
A teenage girl in 1950s Ireland becomes pregnant and is sent to a home for ‘fallen women’, where her baby is forcibly taken from her and sent to America to be adopted. Nearly half a century later, she meets a disillusioned political journalist who is determined to reunite her with her son. Starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan.
Everybody’s talking about… Brooklyn Nine Nine’s SVU makeover.
The Secret Life of Emily Bronte (Channel 4, 6.05pm) Lily Cole explores the author’s world and the groundbreaking novel she produced, Wuthering Heights.
The Chase Bloopers Show (Virgin Media One, 7pm) If, somehow, you haven’t had enough of The Chase yet – here’s a whole episode dedicated to bloopers.
Quantum of Solace (RTÉ 2, 6.30pm) A Bond movie. You know the drill.
Spectre (RTÉ One, 9.05pm) Another Bond movie to keep the Christmas feeling going.
Old Grey Whistle Test: 70s Gold (BBC Four, 10.30pm) Classic performances from the glam era, by Elton John and David Bowie, as well as a look at the beginnings of heavy metal and punk.
The BFG (RTÉ One, 6.30pm) Adventure film about a 10-year-old girl who embarks on a great adventure when she meets a Big Friendly Giant.
Ant-Man (BBC One, 7.50pm) Unable to find work after his release from prison, seasoned thief Scott Lang reverts to his old habits to make a quick buck, when he finds a suit that shrinks the wearer, but allows them to retain their strength.
Aerial Ireland (Virgin Media Three, 8pm) Using stunning aerial photography, this documentary presents viewers with a spectacular overview of an incredibly diverse, beautiful and historically significant island.
Half Light (Virgin Media One, 9pm) Atmospheric drama about an author who moves to a remote Scottish coast to try recover from the death of their child.
About a Boy (TG4, 10.55pm) Adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel starring Hugh Grant.
